Inspiration

My Sister and I went to a restaurant that our parents use to take us to. We use to gag on their selection, of Crab Louis, garlic bread and onion rings. So after 25 years we went back and shared memories over being a child eating their, our parents dancing to the music, and we ate their favorite meal. Talk about delicious. Sometimes revisiting the past can be fun and something that can bring back the best memories.

Our area is really growing around here, new restaurants popping up all over our town and outskirts. We have noticed over half of them are closed within 6 months after opening! I really would have loved to have tried some of their food. These were huge restaurants that built their own buildings or paid huge rentals.

Now that we are into the holiday season, whether we like it or not......I'm curious what your thoughts are on how the restaurant business is doing in these trying times. Do you feel the larger restaurants (perhaps chains) are doing better than the smaller (mom and pop) restaurants? Or is is the other way around? OR are you going where you can get the best deals (coupons, specials, etc.)? Give me your temperature reading on the restaurant business in your community.

I ate out tonight! Burger King had Customer Appreciation Day and sold burgers for 69 cents and cheese burgers for 79 cents. I was so there and I got a bargain (That is, if eating at BK counts as eating out). It certainly was nice of BK to have "Customer Appreciation" days. I wonder what other restaurants offer such incentives for customers to stop by?

I eat out once a week with my sister, our way of getting away from all the pressures. The peace and quiet, relaxing and so needed for each of us. I pay one week she pays the next works out great. Senior discounts are great!

I was just about to comment on eating out and how we haven't really gone to any restaurants to save money, except for special occasions, when I realized: I didn't cook dinner tonight. I took the easy way out and went to the grocery store and bought a ready roasted chicken with all the fixings. Not sure if this counts as eating out or no, but it was delicious and we ate in the comfort of our home. However, when we -do- splurge and head to a restaurant, it is mostly driven by one of two things: 1) available discounts and 2) coupons. Trying to save money where I can in my favorite restaurants.

We haven't been eating out as much since the economy tanked, so I sadly don't have any input but it is always a good thing to try and patronize the little Mom and Pop places and give them a try. They usually have more original things than the big chains.

We've got a little Italian place here in my hometown run by a fellow named Vito who has spent his entire life in the restaurant business. His last restaurant was a family diner, much bigger than the place he has now. He ditched it, bought a former little nondescript box of a building sandwiched amid used car lots in an area where there are NO other restaurants, and has made a great go of things. The place is always crowded, but he purposely keeps it small. He says he's finally making the kind of food that makes his heart sing--Italian, of course. Opera playing in the background. BYOB. We locals love it, and love to introduce it to our friends when they visit from outside the area, always worrying that the place might get a little TOO popular and make it harder for us to get a seat! (No reservations.) The food is simply superb, and diners can watch Vito and his very small team prepare their meals because his kitchen is right out in the dining area separated only by a counter.

Our town just opened up a new Sizzlers. After closing up in many areas am so glad this one opened up here. There salad bar is fresh, watched over, kept clean. And the chicken is always hot never luke warm. Plus all the other items are fresh and not wilted or warm when they should be cold. It has now become my favorite place to relax and eat! Plus it goes along with my diet needs, which is even more important.

It's not a restaurant specifically, but Bourbon & Branch in San Francisco is a really memorable bar for me. The drinks are quite expensive and nearly the entire bar requires reservations, even though no food is served. It's Speakeasy themed in decor, drink-style, and in service, but in a very classy way. I think it provides something that's unique in the very competitive bar marketing of San Francisco.
